How Much Does a VPS Cost in 2026?

Anywhere from $3 to $200+/month depending on specs. Here’s the honest answer — plus a free calculator to find the cheapest option that still fits your needs.

Short answer: a usable VPS starts around $3.50-$6/month, a comfortable small-production server is $10-$25/month, and it climbs from there with RAM and dedicated CPU.

What you're actually paying for

A VPS price is set by four things, roughly in order of impact: dedicated vs shared vCPU, the amount of RAM, NVMe vs regular SSD, and included bandwidth. RAM is usually the number that moves the price most, which is why providers lead with it.

The trap is intro pricing. Some hosts advertise a low monthly rate that needs a 1-3 year prepayment and renews far higher; others (the flat-rate clouds) charge the same in month two as month one. Both models appear below — the difference matters more than a dollar or two on the headline.

EUR providers bill in euros; the figure is native, not converted. Contabo gives by far the most RAM per euro but requires a 24-month commitment.

Rough budget by workload

  • $3.50-$6/mo — a small site, a bot, a staging box, a personal project. 1 vCPU, 1-2 GB RAM.
  • $10-$25/mo — a small production site or store, or a WordPress site with real traffic. 2-4 vCPU, 4-8 GB RAM.
  • $40-$80/mo — a busy store, a membership site, or something that needs dedicated CPU. 4-8 vCPU, 8-16 GB.
  • $100+/mo — high-traffic or resource-heavy apps, usually with dedicated vCPU. Size it with the VPS calculator rather than guessing.

VPS cost questions

Is a $4 VPS actually usable?

For a small site, a staging box or a bot, yes. The constraint is RAM — 0.5-1 GB fills up fast under WordPress with a few plugins. For anything with real traffic, budget $10-25/mo. See how much RAM WordPress needs.

Why is Contabo so much cheaper for the RAM?

It genuinely offers the most RAM per euro, but the headline rate needs a 24-month commitment and support is slower than the premium clouds. That trade is fine for some workloads and wrong for others.

Flat pricing or intro pricing — which is cheaper long term?

Usually flat. An intro rate that renews at 2-3x costs more across three years than a slightly higher flat rate. Work out the total, don't compare headlines.

Do I need managed hosting instead?

If nobody will patch and secure the server, yes — an unmanaged VPS is cheaper per unit but you own the maintenance. See managed vs unmanaged trade-offs.
