Start smaller than you think
Most VPS providers let you resize. Start with the smallest plan that works and scale up only when you hit limits.
Prefer NVMe/SSD over RAM
Fast storage helps most workloads more than extra RAM. NVMe disks are dramatically faster than spinning disks.
Shared vs dedicated vCPU
Shared vCPU is fine for most sites. Dedicated vCPU is for sustained CPU work — not occasional spikes.
Watch bandwidth overage fees
A “$5” VPS can cost hundreds if you blow past the bandwidth cap. Hetzner and Contabo include 20-32TB.
Choose a close data center
Latency matters. Pick a region close to your users, not just what's cheapest.
Snapshots ≠ backups
Use the provider's backup feature AND keep off-site copies of critical data.
