ProviderFromWhat you getThe catch
Vultr$3.50/mo1 vCPU, 0.5 GB, 10 GB0.5 GB RAM is tight; fine for a bot or static site
DigitalOcean$4/mo1 vCPU, 0.5 GB, 10 GBSame RAM constraint; excellent docs
OVHcloud$4.54/mo2 vCPU, 4 GB, 40 GBBest specs at this price; EU/CA data centres
Linode$5/mo1 vCPU, 1 GB, 25 GBSupport included; solid all-rounder
Contabo€5.50/mo4 vCPU, 8 GB, 100 GBEnormous specs, but 24-month term and slower support
Hostinger VPS$6.49/mo1 vCPU, 4 GB, 50 GBIntro rate; renews at $11.99 on a 24-month term

For pure specs-per-dollar, OVHcloud and Contabo win. For flexibility and no lock-in, Vultr, DigitalOcean and Linode bill hourly with nothing prepaid.

How to spot a cheap VPS that will bite you

  • Oversold CPU. "Unlimited" or absurd vCPU counts on a $2 plan mean you share a core with hundreds of others. Steal time kills performance.
  • Intro pricing with a long lock-in. A low headline that needs 24-36 months and renews at 2-3x is not cheap — it's cheap once.
  • No published bandwidth cap. A $3 VPS can cost hundreds if you blow an unstated transfer limit. Check the TB figure.
  • RAM under 1 GB for a real site. It technically boots, then thrashes swap under load. Match RAM to the workload with the VPS calculator.

Cheap VPS questions

What is the cheapest VPS that runs WordPress properly?

Realistically the OVHcloud entry plan (2 vCPU / 4 GB at ~$4.54) or Hostinger VPS (4 GB), because WordPress wants RAM. The $3.50-$4 plans with 0.5 GB will struggle once you add plugins.

Are cheap EU VPS hosts worth it for a US site?

Only if your users are near the EU — latency matters. Contabo and OVH have US regions; netcup and Hetzner are EU-primary. The VPS calculator lets you filter by region.

Is unmanaged VPS too hard for a beginner?

It's a real learning curve — updates, firewall, backups are all yours. If that's not for you, managed hosting or having someone set the server up for you is the honest answer.
