SEO Basics That Actually Move the Needle in 2026
Skip the SEO mythology. Here are the fundamentals that actually get your site ranking — and what to ignore.
SEO is full of myths, outdated advice, and people selling magic beans. Here's what actually matters if you want your site to rank in 2026 — nothing more, nothing less.
1. Target What People Actually Search For
Most small businesses chase keywords that are too broad or too competitive. You won't outrank Amazon for "best shoes" — but you can absolutely own "vegan running shoes for wide feet in Portland."
Long-tail keywords (3-5+ word phrases) convert better *and* are easier to rank for. Use free tools like Google's "People also ask" section and autocomplete suggestions to find what your customers are actually typing.
2. Write for Intent, Not Algorithms
Google has gotten very good at understanding *why* someone searched. Are they looking to buy? Learn? Compare? Fix a problem? Match your page content to the intent, not just the keyword.
A "best CRM for small business" search wants comparisons and recommendations. A "CRM pricing" search wants numbers. Don't write the same page for both.
3. Technical SEO Still Matters
The basics that still move rankings:
- Speed: Google cares about Core Web Vitals. Slow sites get demoted.
- Mobile-first: Your site is ranked based on how it looks on phones.
- HTTPS: Non-secure sites get penalized.
- Structured data: Schema markup helps you win rich results.
- Clean URLs: Short, descriptive URLs beat random strings.
4. Content Depth Beats Content Volume
Publishing 50 thin blog posts hurts you. Publishing 5 excellent, in-depth guides on topics your customers actually care about helps you.
Aim for content that actually answers the question better than anything else ranking for it. If your article isn't the best one on the topic, why should Google send traffic to it?
5. Internal Linking Is Free Ranking Juice
Most sites massively under-use internal linking. Every time you link from one page to another on your site, you're telling Google these pages are related and passing authority.
Create topic clusters: one pillar page on a broad subject, linked to and from many supporting articles.
6. Local SEO If You Serve Local Customers
If you have a physical location or service area:
- Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile
- Get consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across directories
- Collect genuine reviews
- Create location-specific landing pages
This can make the difference between being invisible and being the first call.
7. Backlinks Still Matter (But Quality > Quantity)
One link from a relevant, authoritative site beats 100 links from random directories. Focus on:
- Guest posts on industry sites
- Getting featured in roundups
- Creating linkable assets (original research, calculators, guides)
- Partnerships with complementary businesses
Avoid paid link schemes — Google catches them and penalties hurt.
What to Ignore
- Keyword density: Not a thing anymore
- Meta keywords tag: Ignored by Google for years
- Submitting to search engines: Google finds you automatically
- Exact-match keywords in URLs: Marginal at best
- AI detection obsession: If it's genuinely useful, it ranks
