Instagram Ads That Actually Convert (Not Just Get Likes)

Instagram ads get engagement, but do they drive sales? Here's how to run Instagram ads that actually convert — not just look pretty.

ByDino Bartolome

Instagram ads are beautiful. They get lots of likes. They feel like progress. But if they're not driving revenue, they're just expensive brand awareness. Here's how to make Instagram ads actually move the needle.

The Honest Truth About Instagram Ads

Instagram ads work best for:

  • Visual products (fashion, beauty, food, home goods)
  • Lifestyle brands (fitness, travel, wellness)
  • Creative services (designers, photographers, artists)
  • Products where desire is created, not searched for

If you sell legal services, B2B software, or emergency plumbing, Instagram is probably not your best channel.

Start With Your Existing Content

Before creating new ads, look at your organic Instagram content. What's already working?

  • Posts with above-average engagement
  • Reels that got unusual reach
  • Story content people responded to

Turn your winners into paid ads. Facebook / Instagram's algorithm already rewarded them organically — they'll likely perform well as ads too.

Pick the Right Ad Format

Instagram offers multiple formats. Most small businesses should focus on:

  • Reels ads: Currently the highest-reach, lowest-cost format
  • Story ads: Vertical, full-screen, disappearing format — feels native
  • Feed ads: Traditional square/portrait posts
  • Carousel ads: Multiple images/videos — great for product showcases

Stop using: Static landscape images from five years ago. They don't work.

Creative Principles That Work

1. Native-feeling content Ads that look like ads get scrolled past. Ads that look like organic posts get watched.

2. First 3 seconds are everything For video, put the hook immediately. No intros, no logo animations.

3. Captions that stop the scroll Most people watch without sound. Add text overlays and captions to every video.

4. Show the product in use "Transformation" content, unboxings, before/after — visual proof beats claims.

5. User-generated content converts Real customers showing real results outperform polished brand content.

Targeting on Instagram

All Instagram ads are managed through Meta Ads Manager (same as Facebook). Use:

  • Lookalike audiences of your best customers
  • Interest targeting layered with demographics
  • Retargeting website visitors and video viewers (huge on IG)
  • Engagement custom audiences (people who engaged with your posts)

Measuring What Actually Matters

Don't celebrate likes. Track:

  • Click-through rate (benchmark: 1%+)
  • Cost per click
  • Website conversion rate from Instagram traffic
  • Return on ad spend (ROAS)
  • Cost per acquisition

If your ad is getting likes but no clicks, the creative is failing at its job.

Common Mistakes

  • Running ads without a clear destination: Send them to a purpose-built landing page
  • Boosting posts vs. proper campaigns: Boosting is the tourist version; campaigns give you real control
  • Judging by engagement, not revenue: Likes don't pay bills
  • Ignoring comments on ads: Respond to every one — it doubles as social proof
  • Running the same ad forever: Fatigue happens fast; refresh creative every 2-3 weeks

Budget Expectations

  • Testing: $300-1000 to find winning creative/audience combinations
  • Scaling: Start at $20-50/day on your winners, increase slowly
  • Maintenance: Refresh creative every 2-3 weeks to fight ad fatigue
