Do I Need an SSL Certificate? (Yes — Here's Why)
If your site shows 'Not Secure' in the browser, you're losing trust and rankings. Here's what SSL does, why you need it, and how to set it up.
If you see "Not Secure" in your browser's address bar when visiting your website, you have a problem. Here's what it means and how to fix it.
What Is SSL?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encrypts the connection between your website and your visitors. When SSL is active, your site shows a padlock icon and uses "https://" instead of "http://".
Why You Need It
1. Google Requires It
Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. Sites without SSL get pushed down in search results. Google Chrome also shows a prominent "Not Secure" warning on non-HTTPS sites.
2. Visitors Don't Trust "Not Secure"
Would you enter your credit card on a site that says "Not Secure"? Neither would your customers. Even if you don't take payments, that warning makes people leave.
3. Forms Won't Work Properly
Modern browsers block or warn about form submissions on non-HTTPS pages. Your contact form might not work at all without SSL.
4. It's Usually Free
Let's Encrypt provides free SSL certificates. Most hosting providers include SSL at no extra cost. There's literally no reason not to have it.
How to Set It Up
- Check with your host — most offer one-click SSL installation
- Install the certificate via your hosting control panel
- Force HTTPS — redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS
- Update internal links — make sure everything points to https://
- Test — check for mixed content warnings (HTTP resources on HTTPS pages)
Common SSL Problems
- Mixed content warnings: Some resources still loading over HTTP
- Certificate expired: Needs renewal (should be automatic with Let's Encrypt)
- Wrong domain on certificate: Certificate doesn't match your domain name
- Redirect loops: Incorrect HTTPS redirect configuration
Need Help?
SSL setup is usually straightforward, but problems can be tricky to debug — especially mixed content issues and redirect loops. I can get your site secured and showing that padlock in under an hour.
